Service learning is a core component built into the annual calendar. Wherever possible, these community initiatives take place within the context of the major theme being studied at the time. (see integrated theme-based learning). Projects focusing on tikkun olam (repair of the world) enable students to realize that all learning does not involve books. Each year, Maccabi Academy staff and students spend time volunteering at the MANNA Food Bank, visiting the Jewish Council on Aging's Elder Day Club, collecting trash, and helping to tend the Children's Garden at the Jewish Community Center. This year Maccabi Academy will be taking Tikkun Olam to an entirely new level as we present Hands of Hope, a collaborative program involving other area schools. Read more here. |
